Writer/director Daniel Adams has been sentenced to two to three years in prison after inflating his expenses while applying for film tax credits in his native Massachusetts.

The 51-year-old was accused of exaggerating expenditures during the filming of both Blythe Danner's The Lightkeepers and David Carradine's The Golden Boys in Cape Cod, resulting in nearly $US4.7 million ($A4.69 million) in tax credit overpayments.

In April he pleaded guilty to several charges, including larceny and making a false claim, and on Thursday Adams was convicted of fraud and handed the jail sentence.

Massachusetts Superior Court Judge Carol Ball also placed Adams on 10 years' probation and ordered the filmmaker to pay $US4.4 million in restitution.
