Fans eagerly awaiting the release of The Hobbit movies may get a sneak peek of more footage next week, as director Sir Peter Jackson promotes them at a US comic convention.

Shooting for the two movies - based on J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit - wound up in New Zealand on Friday after two years.

Sir Peter, in a Facebook posting, announced the end of 266 days of shooting, and said the next stop would be the cutting room.

"Oh, and Comic Con!" he said.

Comic-Con 2012 starts in San Diego with a preview night on Wednesday, local time.

Warner Bros is screening previews of five of its upcoming movies and while The Hobbit is not listed, a sneak peek at footage "is all but guaranteed", MTV reports.

The Hobbit would have a serious presence at the convention during the Warner Bros panel on July 14, with everyone from Sir Peter to the film's lead actors Martin Freeman, Sir Ian McKellen, Richard Armitage and Andy Serkis expected to attend.

A 2min32sec Hobbit trailer has already been released.

The first of two Hobbit films will premiere at Wellington's Embassy theatre on November 28 and will be released worldwide in December.

Following the pattern of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, the second Hobbit movie will be released in December 2013.

A wrap party for The Hobbit shooting will be held in Wellington on Saturday night, the Dominion Post reports.

About 3500 people were expected to attend the party at a waterfront arena.
