First look: Anne Hathaway slims down for role in Les Miserables

Anne Hathaway has debuted a gaunt new look on the London set of Les Miserables alongside a scruffy Hugh Jackman.

Looking the opposite of her glam Hollywood image with newly cropped hair and prominent collarbones, the 29-year-old actress is said to have lost seven kilos in the three weeks leading up to filming, Daily Mail reports.

She was required to undergo the extreme makeover to play Fantine in the film, a dying prostitute.

Anne's transformation can be put down to a hardcore diet that sees her consume just 500 calories a day — well below the recommended daily allowance of 2000 calories per day.

A source told Daily Mirror earlier this month that Anne has been eating "a couple of apples a day, and some protein — mainly in the form of a shake".

Anne also has a personal trainer, and doctors keeping tabs on her diet, the source claimed.

She really does look the part of a starving heroine, but we can't help but think of another Anne she resembles:

Les Miserables, directed by The King's Speech Oscar winner Tom Hooper, is out Boxing Day.
