New Dark Knight Rises trailer unlocked frame-by-frame by fans

As The Avengers blitzes cinemas worldwide, one of the year's other most-anticipated superhero films, The Dark Knight Rises, has debuted a third trailer online thanks to fan participation in a social media viral campaign.

Batman obsessives flocked to the movie's official website where they were asked to help "catch The Batman", a vigilante believed to have killed six people, in a dossier including a warrant for The Batman's arrest.

The document listed addresses where "bat graffiti" could be found at TheDarkKnightRises.com. Fans who tweeted pictures of the bat graffiti or emailed "tdkr07202012@gothampolicederpartment.com" were rewarded with a frame from the new trailer.

As new frames became available, fans compiled them into animated GIFs and put them online.

Once the trailer was complete, Warner Bros. released a high-definition version of the trailer, and that's the one you'll see here.

Highlights include more Catwoman (Anne Hathaway) than we've seen before; torture scenes and face-offs between Bane (Tom Hardy) and Batman (Christian Bale); explosive new action sequences with Gotham City under attack and Batman's latest high-tech vehicle; and menacing suggestions that Bane has killed Batman.

Are they leading us on? Will the caped crusader survive to save the day? Or has he met his darkest night?

The Dark Knight Rises hits cinemas July 19. Start the count down.
