Robert Downey Jr. to get $50 million from The Avengers

Robert Downey Jr.'s recent appearance as Iron Man in The Avengers will earn the actor more than $50 million due to some clever negotiation a few years ago.

The 47-year-old actor earns a percentage of The Avengers massive box office total (over $1 billion) from any appearance as Iron Man following a deal he signed in 2008, after the success of the first Iron Man film.

Robert's salary is several times the amount of his co-stars Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Jeremy Renner and Mark Ruffalo who all earned between $2-3 million. Scarlett Johansson and Samuel L. Jackson are reported to be receiving double that amount.

The low salaries for the actors was Marvel's attempt to keep costs down, with the large amount of superheroes needed for the film.

The Avengers has already broken box office records with its stellar premiere week, toppling previous record holder Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows, Part 2.

Due to The Avengers success, there is a confirmed sequel to the film as well as an Iron Man 3.

Just goes to show how some forward thinking shrewdness can pay off in a big way.
