Lady Gaga forced to cancel Indonesian concert after threats from Islamic extremists

Lady Gaga was initially refused a permit to perform after the Islamic Defender Front (FPI) put pressure on the Indonesian police, but it was hoped she could alter the show to appease the concerns of the Islamic fundamentalists.

However the group threatened violence on the singer and her "Little Monsters" claiming she was an "envoy of the devil's child".

"She's a vulgar singer who wears only panties and a bra when she sings," said Salim Alatas, the Jakarta head of the FPI.

"She stated she is the envoy of the devil's child and that she will spread satanic teaching."

The show in Jakarta had almost sold out, despite ticket prices close to the monthly wage of many Indonesians.

Indonesia is a secular state, but has a high percentage of moderate Muslims. Past acts such as Beyoncé and The Pussycat Dolls have faced the FPI and affiliate groups' criticism when touring Indonesia, but they dressed more conservatively to appease the requests of the fundamentalists.

However Lady Gaga and her promoters were unsuccessful, receiving threats that the FPI had bought tickets to the show, just to sabotage the performance.

Although upset, Lady Gaga sent a message of hope to her Indonesian "monsters".

"I'm so very sorry to the fans & just as devastated as you if not more. You are everything to me," she wrote on her Twitter.

"I will try to put together something special for you. My love for Indonesia has only grown."
