Miley Cyrus engagement: Dad Billy Ray hopes it will be a 'very long one'

Billy Ray Cyrus has given his blessing to daughter Miley and future son-in-law Liam Hemsworth on the news of their engagement, but he’s hoping the youngsters won't rush down the aisle too soon.

"All I ever hoped for as a daddy was to see my kids reach their dreams. To find happiness ... peace of mind ... and someday know ... true love," the 'Achy Breaky Heart' crooner tweeted today.

Liam, 22, asked Billy Ray and his wife Tish for permission to pop the question to Miley, 19, Radar Online reports.

He sealed the deal on May 31 with a 3.5-carat diamond ring, and the couple kept their news under wraps for a week before going public.

"I'm so happy to be engaged and look forward to a life of happiness with Liam," Miley told People yesterday.

Miley took to Twitter to thank well-wishers from her 5.8 million followers.

Billy Ray loves Liam "like a son", but is about his daughter getting hitched at such a young age, a source close to the family told Radar Online.

"He hopes that they aren't in a rush to get married. Billy Ray hopes the engagement will be very long, but he isn't opposed to the marriage at all," the source said. "Billy Ray got divorced from his first wife Cindy though and he just doesn't want Miley to go through a similar heartbreak."

The Hunger Games star Liam lived with Miley and her parents when the pair started dating in 2009 after falling in love on the set of romantic drama The Last Song.

Miley also received tweets of congratulations from Tom Hanks' wife Rita Wilson, and singer Jordin Sparks.

miley cyrus is still too young to even think on getting married she has'nt seen the world or even experienced life yet she has grown up to quick and thats no good i say give her a year if that and she will have regets in marriage but this is what happens when you have a lot of money you can go places do whatever you want and be able to aford it she can make her dreams come true or her dad can i wish i had money i would do the same and fine love she is so lucky money plays a big roll in live i wish i had money i'd go to the shop first and buy a real bread and butter to feed my children some people have all the luck in the world i'll keep dreaming
