Liquid only diet: Matthew McConaughey's crazy weight loss for new movie

Matthew McConaughey looks like a shadow of his former buff self as he prepares for a new movie role.

Photographed on the set of his new movie The Wolf of Wall Street, the actor has shed a drastic amount of weight to play a terminally ill character on his next project The Dallas Buyer’s Club.

Matthew recently told talk show host Larry King that he was embarking on a tough "liquid only diet" to lose 30lbs (13.5kg) for the role.

"It's a bit of a spiritual cleanse, mental cleanse," the 42-year-old said. "[I'm] drinking a lot of tea.

"It takes a while for your body to understand that it has to feed off of itself and that you're not going to give it something else from the outside," he added.

The Dallas Buyer's Club is based on the true life story of Ron Woodruff, a Dallas man who contracted HIV from drug use in the 1980s.

"For me, it's more of a mental thing than a physical thing," Matthew said of his extreme weight loss. "It's what I need to do for the job."
