It's official: Avatar is highest earning film of all-time

Avatar

The king of the world is dead: Avatar has toppled Titanic as the highest-grossing film of all time.

Avatar took just 39 days to overtake the US$1.8 billion made by Titanic — which was also directed by James Cameron — after its release in 1998.

And the blockbuster's run in cinemas still has a long way to go, meaning it has plenty of time to rake in more cash.

"We are deeply gratified that so many millions of people around the globe have embraced Avatar," said Fox in a statement. "The themes of protecting the environment, respecting life, and yearning for a peaceful planet have united moviegoers worldwide."

But once inflation and ticket prices are taken into account, Avatar is no longer the most successful film of all time — that title belongs to Gone with the Wind, according to Box Office Mojo's analysis of US box office tallies.

Gone with the wind was re-released many times and there was no piracy in those days. if Avatar was re-released 20 times and movie piracy did not exist, i wonder how much it would make. The inflation myth is a poor excuse as an indication for box office success.
