Amy Winehouse was in the process of adopting a child from St Lucia before her sudden death, The Mirror reports.

10-year-old Dannika Augustine, who lives in poverty with her single mother, first met Amy in 2009 through her grandmother, who runs a beach bar on the Caribbean island.

According to the girl and her family, Amy was due to visit next week and had already begun the adoption process.

"Amy was already my mother," Dannika tells The Mirror. "I would call her mum and she would call me her daughter. She took care of me and we had fun together. I loved her and she loved me. She was the most amazing person and I was looking forward to living with her here or in London. I cannot believe she is gone."

The girl's grandmother added, "Amy loved Dannika with all her heart. I don't know why Amy took to Dannika above all the other children on the island, but from the moment they met they were inseparable. They would spend all day playing, horse riding and walking up and down the beach hand-in-hand.

"Amy used to beg me, 'I want to adopt Dannika. I want to take her to England'. She was prepared to move to St Lucia to be her full-time mum. Amy wanted to have a child so bad. If she had not died, there is no doubt she would be here in St Lucia completing the adoption process. There is no way she would have done what she did to herself if Dannika was with her."

According to the article, Dannika's mother agreed to the adoption because she was unemployed and struggling to support her family. The girl's father, who lives Germany, had also agreed after Amy phoned him to ask for his consent.

this kind of worries me. yes the want to adopt a child may have come from a good place, and it might have helped amy sort her life out a bit, but i think in order to care for someone else, you need to be able to care for yourself. unfortunately i dont think amy was in that kind of position. just because you want to be a mother does not mean it is the right time to be a mother...it can pay to wait for the right time
