Sex And The City's Cynthia had breast cancer

Just after flame-haired actress Cynthia Nixon played the glamorous Miranda on hit TV show Sex And The City, she kept a dark and tragic secret - she had breast cancer.

While undergoing treatment, she put on a brave face to the public and kept her illness to herself - but has now come clean about her experience.

"I didn't really want to make it public while I was going through it," she told US show Nightline. " I didn't want paparazzi at the hospital, that kind of thing."

Cynthia's mum Ann beat breast cancer when Cynthia was just 12 years old. "I always sort of thought, 'I'm probably going to get breast cancer. There's a really good chance.'" Cynthia admitted.

Performing in a play after Sex And The City wrapped, Cynthia didn't let on she was battling the illness - even rescheduling her treatments so she wouldn't miss a single performance of her play. Now that's commitment! The fact that the cancer was detected so early meant Cynthia had a great chance of beating it.

"I felt scared… I thought, 'Oh, I don't want this to be happening.' I was very cognizant of if it's going to happen, this is the best way for it to happen, that it's found so early and we can just get right on it."

"I want them [women] most to hear me saying that the only thing we have to fear is fear itself. So the only thing to really be afraid of is if you don't go get your mammograms, because there's some part of you that doesn't want to know, and that's the thing that's going to trip you up. That's the thing that could have a really bad endgame," she warns.
